Toy Hacking! Maker Night & Repair Café

Ever wondered what’s inside your favourite toys? Looking for ideas on how to reinvent an outgrown childhood trinket? Need a little help fixing something that was played with a little too hard?
Join us at the makerspace on Thursday November 23 for a fun maker night and special toy hacking edition of Repair Café.
Featuring toy projects by YuKonstruct members, a Furby dissection and all the usual Repair Café fixing, this will be a learning experience suitable for all ages!

Repair Café Whitehorse has been helping fix broken stuff with monthly drop-in events at YuKonstruct since 2014. Broken toaster, vacuum cleaner or other small home appliance? Bring it in and see if it is fixable using soldering irons, multimeters and other tools. This easy introduction to electronics and small home appliance repair is a useful evening of DIY learning that you can literally take home.

About the team: Glenn Piwowar has been a registered Professional Engineer in the Yukon for more than 20 years and is a born-again proponent of the Maker’s 3Rs: “Repair, Re-purpose, Re-create”. Michelle Clusiau is always making things; you will frequently find her trying new projects on the laser cutter and sharing her expertise with other YuKonstruct members.

This free event is open to both YuKonstruct members and the public.

Repair Cafe // Instructables Reclaimed Contest – Waste not, want not!

Waste not, want not!

While it is fun to buy supplies, there is a special feeling that comes along with taking old materials and transforming them into something new. For the Reclaimed Contest, reclaim materials that were used to make one thing and use them to create a whole new project!

Tear out all the wood, plastic, metal, fabric and more from your old and failed projects. It’s time to see what new creation emerges from these reclaimed materials!

Michelle gave a new life to her old typewriter case by transforming it into a suitcase adapted for her sewing and soft furnishing repair supplies for Repair Cafe. Inserts were made on the laser cutter (1/4” plywood).

Repair Cafe – Deconstruction Night!

This very special edition of Repair Cafe will focus on taking things apart and not necessarily putting them back together.

Bring in all your old electronics and broken appliances! We’ll have fun deconstructing them, figuring out why they no longer work and hopefully harvesting some useful parts from the junk.
