Build a cold frame for northern gardening!

Cold frames warm the soil, protect plants from frost, and give you a head start on the growing season. This program is a hands-on experience where you will learn how to build cold frames yourself by helping us build two for our community garden at Northlight!
About the instructor: Bob Sharp has been growing veggies in the Yukon since the 60s, and for over 20 years he has been teaching northerners how to build a better greenhouse that can extend the growing season by two to three months.

Building Lanterns for Winterval

YuKonstruct was pleased to participate in Unlikely Events Yukon‘s Winterval parade again this year.

The theme for this year’s event was “Festival of Lights”. Our makerspace volunteers designed and built 3 large lanterns complete with jack frost and his friends.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped cut lumber, paint the pieces, attach the screens, model for the winter fairies, assemble the lanterns and pull the carts through the snowy streets!

Volunteer Build – Lanterns for Winterval Parade

Join us on Sunday November 27th from 1pm onward to help build large lanterns for the Winterval Parade being put on by Unlikely Events Yukon.

YuKonstruct has participated in this parade before with a group of kids wearing laser cut airplanes. What does this year’s parade contribution entail? Well, think snowflakes, glitter, jack frost, snow ferries, and large lanterns.  Check the forum for details.

Help us to build these and/or join us in the parade happening on December 3rd at 4 pm down Main street.

Feel free to drop by 135 Industrial Road to help out. Email volunteer@yukonstruct.com for more info.

Pride Parade 2016

Saturday June 25th was the Pride Parade in Whitehorse and YuKonstruct was pleased to participate for the second year in a row.

YuKonstruct and (co)space’s contribution to the parade was a wonderfully whimsical float with rainbows, unicorns, truffula trees, bright colours, bubbles, and bikes! After winning “best float” in last years parade, YuKonstruct had a reputation to uphold!

A lot of awesome volunteer hours went into building the float and having fun, colourful, enthusiastic bubble blowers ride with us in the parade. THANK YOU to everyone that came out!

Next up: Canada Day! For anyone interested in joining our float for the parade, we will be re-decorating and riding down the streets with moose instead of unicorns and red and white replacing the rainbows. Here’s more info on the Canada Day Parade. You can also email questions to info@yukonstruct.com

Building the Steampunk Ball Decorations

YuKonstruct was invited by the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society to build the decorations for the 2016 Steampunk Ball.

While we helped with decorations last year by laser cutting cardboard gears, this year was a whole different story; we were given free reign and a large budget to spend on making décor for the ball. To fit with the “Around the World” Rendezvous theme, our decorations were inspired by steampunk travel.

Volunteers from the Yukon Comic Culture Society and Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society collaborated with YuKonstruct members to design and build a large airship, jacob’s ladder, compass rose, porthole photobooth backdrop and steampunk aviators to decorate the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

The large props, like the airship and compass rose, were first designed in 3 dimensions in SketchUp. The designs were then converted into pieces that could be cut out on the laser cutter and CNC using the CorelDRAW and Aspire software. Different materials were used for the different props: the porthole was entirely made of lightweight foam, whereas the compass rose and airship were built from different thicknesses of plywood. Chris Lloyd designed the airship and porthole, and Logan Sherk, our facilities manager, designed the steampunk compass rose. Logan also did all the design and build work for the impressive jacob’s ladder.

Once all the pieces were cut out, they were assembled and painted by an incredible team of volunteers. In total, 21 volunteers helped bring it all together!

YuKonstruct would like to thank the amazing volunteers from the Yukon Comic Culture Society for helping build the props, the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society for giving us the opportunity to do this fun community project and the staff at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre for doing the installation and takedown.

Join us from 1pm to 4pm on February 20th and 21st to build the decorations that will transform the Kwanlin Dun Culture Centre into an incredible steampunk setting.

Please wear clothes that you can paint in!
