Executive Director (ED), Yukonstruct Society

Full Time (37.5hr/wk)

Yukonstruct Society is Yukon’s preeminent collaboration and innovation hub for makers, learners, innovators and inventors. The organization operates:

  • Northlight Innovation, a multi-tenant innovation hub, along with three other program arms:
  • Cospace, a vibrant coworking space;
  • Makespace, a maker and prototyping space complete with industrial shops and technology-driven equipment; and
  • Business and Innovation Support, an entrepreneur programming arm dedicated to serve, grow and launch all walks of entrepreneurs in the Yukon. 

The Board of Yukonstruct Society is looking for a new Executive Director to lead this fast growing and exciting organization. Working closely with the Board, the ED has the opportunity to continue to develop the growth, direction and innovative impact of Canada’s first Innovation Hub north of 60. The organization oversees the operations of a 24,000 sqft facility, housing close to 200 members and partner tenants in innovation. We are currently working on a strategic framework refresh for 2023-2025 and are keen to have our new ED join this critical process and planning time.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline (B.Comm, MBA, formal education in management or leadership, financial and/or project management);
  • Experience in senior leadership and/or operations of a non-profit with a Board of Directors;
  • Significant Human Resource Management or supervisory experience;
  • Significant financial management experience;
  • Experience managing operations of a facility and/or program delivery; and
  • Experience setting up and operating administrative and operational systems.

Desired Skills and Experiences:

  • Understanding of the entrepreneurial and/or innovation ecosystem and how to support and grow ideas;
  • Understanding of the maker movement, hacker culture, and technology spaces;
  • Experience working with and reporting to a Board of Directors;
  • Sponsorship and fundraising experience;
  • People and program managerial experience;
  • Grant writing and fund development experience;
  • Knowledge and understanding of government relations and advocacy;
  • Public Relations, marketing, and/or communications experience; and
  • Time and organizational management.

  • Able to lead and support staff, members and volunteers;
  • Able to inspire and build partnerships that serve the mandate and vision of the Society;
  • Able to multi-task projects, people, funding, Board and member demands;
  • Able to effectively manage an annual budget of $2 million 
  • Able to prioritize and to delegate; and
  • Able to report to and work with the Board as a team while implementing and leading the strategic plans and priorities of the Society.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Help lead and set a clear direction for staff and volunteers;
  • Ensure successful operations of Board oversight, reporting and records management together with the Board;
  • Represent the organization as a spokesperson with the Chair or designate from the Board, or delegate to staff as appropriate;
  • Report to the Board on all aspects of the organization, linked to the strategic plan and all components connecting the Board and organization to fiduciary and legislative; responsibilities;
  • Provide monitoring reports to the Board meeting, linked to financial accountability and strategy;
  • Participate or delegate attendance to all relevant Board Committee meetings; and
  • Work with the Board to align the current environment with future opportunities, working to ensure a long-term focus on building the organization.

Human Resources Planning and Management

  • Ensure the necessary organizational structure and related staffing requirements in keeping with Society and organizational priorities and budgets;
  • Recruit and train a team with the appropriate technical skills and personal abilities; and
  • Ensure HR Policies and procedures are up to date, up to code and in keeping with Yukon Employment Standards including compensation, employee reviews, performance reviews and development opportunities, etc.

Operational Planning and Management

  • Develop and oversee an annual work plan approved by the Board in line with budget;
  • Ensure that the organization’s operations remain relevant to members and meet the expectations of the board, government agencies, and partners;
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization through the Operations Director and Makespace Director;
  • Ensure the organization is in good standing with Corporate Affairs and the CRA;
  • Policy development, review and management;
  • Ensure adherence and implementation of the organization operational, financial, and personnel policies/procedures; and
  • Work with the Board to ensure appropriate, relevant and sufficient policies are in place for all facets of the organization – either in governance or operations.

Fundraising and sponsorship development

  • Develop a revenue diversification strategy, in line with the Societies Strategic Plan, for Board approval that may include new revenue models, fundraising and sponsorship opportunities or innovative programming;
  • Oversee sponsorship activities and development through Creative Communications Director; and
  • Develop and grow revenue-generating activities to increase earned revenue percentage.

Financial Management

  • Draft for Board approval, annual budgets to actuals, that are in keeping with strategic priorities and operational requirements;
  • Work closely with the organization’s bookkeeper and treasurer to generate updated financial statements, manage payroll and all necessary CRA filings and obligations;
  • Administer the organization’s funds according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash-flow; and
  • Support the Treasurer in developing regular reports to the Board on actuals to budget and variances, etc.

Risk Management

  • Identify and evaluate the risks to people (board, clients, staff, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image;
  • Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization have appropriate and adequate insurance coverage; and
  • Ensure that the Board, staff, volunteers and members understand the terms, conditions and limitations of the insurance coverage.
