A Conversation with makers from Splintered Craft and Yukonstruct
Splintered Craft is a free youth led arts drop in studio (open 2-8pm Monday – Friday) located in downtown Whitehorse, Yukon. Our main focus is to help at risk young adults breakdown barriers to employment through art & music. Providing a positive, healthy & creative atmosphere paired with using a diverse set of arts workshops and mentorship programs, has quickly turned a three-month pilot project into a local fixture in the community. The program (provided by Skookum Jim Friendship Centre) first opened its doors mid January this year. Since then it has partnered with over 20 local organizations to provide over a hundred workshops (in house and out in the community), events & mentorship opportunities for local youth.
YuKonstruct is the Yukon’s makerspace and Canada’s first makerspace north of 60. It is a community-driven hub with quality equipment, expertise, and programming. Barely a year old, YuKonstruct has around 100 members and has hosted over 50 workshops for over 500 participants. YuKonstruct is where ideas come to life and entrepreneurship and innovation flourish. Most recently, YuKonstruct has taken on a second project: a coworking space!
