Join us for an exciting one-off Maker Academy, choose your own adventure-style!
Participants will be able to choose a project from 4 different options, and will then be guided through the full process of building their project, by long-time wood-workers Murray Long and Grant Sullivan. During each session, participants will be given the training and knowledge to approach the project of their choice, focusing on technique and skill-building, including in carpentry, joinery, tool use, and woodworking vocabulary.
Then, with a month of 24/7 membership, participants will have full access to the Makespace shops to hone these skills as they work towards completing their project.
4 options:
- Piano bench (walnut, cherry, birch or white oak – depending on seasonal availability)
- Shaker-style side table (cherry wood)
- A small cabinet (wood is depending on seasonal availability)
- A small bedside chest of drawers (pine wood)
Sessions will cover the use of modern power tools, designing and cutting the pieces, and various joinery methods to connect them, including pocket hole screws, biscuits and dowels. Participants will gain familiarity with the compound mitre saw, table saw, jointer, planer, router, drill press, biscuit joiner, orbital sander and various jigs and hand tools.
This Maker Academy runs over all of these dates, and attendance is required at each session to continue progressing skills and knowledge, and receiving support from Murray and Grant.

About the Instructors:
Murray Long
Murray Long enjoys sharing his knowledge of woodworking with others, and has led several previous classes on how to design and fabricate furniture and cabinetry, based on his own experience of designing and building everything from armoires to beds, dining tables, coffee tables, benches, children’s toys and custom kitchen cabinets. He is a big fan of Shaker and Arts & Crafts era design and the use of hand planes, hand saws and chisels in woodworking.
Grant Sullivan
Grant Sullivan is a woodworker and furniture maker based in Whitehorse. He completed the Craftsman Program at Rosewood Studio in Perth, Ontario, in 2010, where he developed a strong foundation in furniture design, traditional joinery, and fine craftsmanship.
Since then, Grant has continued building furniture in his home workshop, with an emphasis on clean, practical designs made for everyday use. His projects have included dressers, tables, cabinetry, built-ins, and custom pieces for his home and family—including a vanity he designed and built alongside his daughter.
Grant enjoys the full process of woodworking, from developing an idea and selecting materials to solving problems during a build and applying the final finish. As a co-instructor, he looks forward to creating a welcoming, hands-on learning environment and helping participants develop the confidence and practical skills to build furniture of their own.
