This intermediate sewing class will cover how to sew zippers two ways. You’ll learn how to draft two sizes of zipper pouches onto cotton fabric, cut them out and sew them up in one evening. In addition to completing two pouches, Georgi will also share with you her tips and tricks for sewing hidden zippers, like you would find in garments or cushion covers. Sewing machines and tools will be provided to all participants. We encourage you to bring your own sewing machine, so long as it is in working order and has a new needle, a bobbin, and a zipper foot.
Important: You will need to bring your own fabric and notions for this class. These materials can usually be found at Walmart or Bear Paw Quilts:
Small Zip Pouch:
– 7” zipper
– 2 fat quarters (= 18” x 22” piece of cotton fabric), one for lining and one for outside of pouch
– 1m fusible interfacing, mid-weight or feather weight (this will be enough for both projects)
– Coordinating thread
Zipper Clutch/Project Pouch:
– 10” zipper (if you can’t find one in town, we will provide them)
– Half a metre of 2 different cotton fabrics, one for lining and one for outside of bag
– Coordinating thread
* Half a metre of 2 different fabrics is enough to do both pouches if you want them to be made of the same fabric. If you want to make them different, be sure to bring 2 fat quarters for the small pouch and 2 half metres for the clutch, as listed above.
About the Instructor: Georgi is a part time seamstress and sewing machine repair person in Whitehorse. Her sewn goods can be found at many of the Christmas craft markets and she is well known for her flannel-lined toddler pants called Quilty Pants. Georgi picked up her sewing skills from her mom, her grade 7 Home Economics class and from Fashion Design courses at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. She is excited to start teaching sewing skills, tips, and shortcuts to others.
