Introducing Shayna, our Executive Director!

How did you get involved with YuKonstruct?

I came for the crepes! No, more realistically, I had attended several events at Yukonstruct and fell in love with the community. Last year, Lana (our prior ED) also asked if I’d support the Selection Committee for the Hall of Innovation Awards through my prior role with the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, and it was very inspiring to hear what types of people were being recognized.

Why did you join YuKonstruct?

I believe that everyone works best when given appropriate resources and support to learn. When you come into NorthLight, there is a general sense of people supporting one another, and everyone contributing to an ecosystem. The innovation and power that people share in working together is invigorating and inspiring and I wanted to contribute to that.

What do you like most about Yukonstruct being up and running?

I appreciate that it gives a home base to so many people, whether they be entrepreneurs, students, or many different types of makers. I also appreciate that it allows people to work together very collaboratively and I believe this contributes directly to community sustainability and community welfare.

Why should people become YuKonstruct members?

Whether you’re a midnight maker or a 6 am (co)space member, there’s a great benefit to working in a space that is so dynamic and constantly evolving. The ideas that flow between individuals, or organizations, are incredible, and the growth that occurs here in working with others really matters in terms of how impactful each contribution can be.

What do you like to make?

I’ve dabbled in everything- painting, willow weaving, stagecraft! Lately, my making mostly involves food! I’ve been a crafter all my life and grew up in a major maker home, so have always enjoyed creating things and sharing whatever I make.

What do you want to build at YuKonstruct?

I’m happy to keep learning about how Yukonstruct serves the community and contributes to its growth and evolution. As I continue to grow with the Yukonstruct Team, I’d like to ensure that we’re a place that is open to everyone and that we remain flexible throughout times of change.

Thanks for sharing these, Shayna!
